New story in Health from Time: The Night I Broke: A Doctor on the Conversations That Never Get Easier

I watched the cardiac monitor of a patient who had a “Do Not Resuscitate” order transform from a sinusoidal rhythm – seen when patients have very high levels of potassium that the kidneys are not working well enough to clear – to asystole, better known as a flat line. The patient was COVID-19 positive, like most, of the patients in the hospital in New York City at the end of March. He presented to the emergency department days earlier with respiratory distress and had required a breathing tube and ventilator support. At that time, he did not have a “Do Not Resuscitate” order, but was rather “Full Code,” indicating that we should do anything in our power to prolong his life. While in the ICU, his condition worsened, leading to kidney failure that dialysis could not fix. We had had a difficult discussion with the family a day earlier regarding his poor prognosis and they decided not to prolong his suffering and not to escalate care, meaning we would keep everything as it was and

New story in Health from Time: Trump Says U.S. Will Run 5 Million Daily Virus Tests ‘Very Soon.’ His Testing Chief Says That’s Impossible

President Donald Trump declared Tuesday that the U.S. will be able to carry out five million coronavirus tests per day, but the top official overseeing testing strategy told TIME earlier in the day that goal wasn’t feasible given current technology. Admiral Brett Giroir, the assistant secretary of health who is in charge of the government’s testing response, said during an interview on Tuesday morning that “there is absolutely no way on Earth, on this planet or any other planet, that we can do 20 million tests a day, or even five million tests a day.” Since the beginning of the year, the Administration has conducted 5.7 million tests in total, he said. And while the government has made strides in increasing the number of tests being performed in recent months, the White House’s new “blueprint” for testing, rolled out on Monday, currently plans to double current COVID-19 testing. Giroir plans to hit 8 million per month by next month. The tally would still fall short of wh

New story in Health from Time: UN Chief Says ‘Collaborative Leadership’ Is Critical to Fight Both Coronavirus and Climate Change

(BERLIN) — U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Tuesday that the coronavirus pandemic has exposed how fragile societies are but that if governments work together on common challenges, including global warming, it can be an opportunity to “rebuild our world for the better.” Speaking at a two-day international meeting on climate change, the United Nations chief said the only effective response to the worldwide health emergency is “brave, visionary and collaborative leadership.” “The same leadership is needed to address the looming existential threat of climate disruption,” Guterres said, noting that the past decade was the hottest in history since measurements began. He urged the European Union to show “global leadership” by presenting updated emissions reduction plans by the end of the year that would put Europe on course to become the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. But Guterres added that other big emitters also have come on board. He noted that the Gr

New story in Health from Time: Pandemic Causing Shortage of Contraceptives and Will Impact Women’s Reproductive Health, Says U.N.

The number of women unable to access contraception, experiencing unintended pregnancies and facing gender-based violence will skyrocket as the COVID-19 pandemic continues over the coming months, according to a new United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) report . “This new data shows the catastrophic impact that COVID-19 could soon have on women and girls globally,” Dr. Natalia Kanem, UNFPA Executive Director said in a press release . “The pandemic is deepening inequalities, and millions more women and girls now risk losing the ability to plan their families and protect their bodies and their health.” New data released by UNFPA, the UN’s sexual and reproductive health agency, predicts that over 47 million women could lose access to contraception, resulting in 7 million unplanned pregnancies if the lockdown continues for six months.
