Sometimes the best pieces in your wardrobe, are the ones you can sport in more ways than one. One item that is often a staple in wardrobes, that is not always thought of to wear in more than one way, is a cardigan.
According to wikipedia, cardigans are named after James Brudenell, 7th Earl of Cardigan, a British Army Major General who led the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. This piece of clothing is modelled after the knitted wool waistcoat that was supposedly worn by British officers during the war.
Cardigans are often worn layered over another piece of clothing, usually a shirt, blouse, or sleeveless knit for a more formal look, and a tank top or t-shirt for a more casual vibe.
But for fall, I suggest trying your favorite cardigan in a new way, buttoned up as a shirt all by itself. If you’re interested in trying this look, keep these tips in mind:
- Choose a fitted style. An oversized sweater will cause a lot of bulk on your top half when you button it up, instead opt for a more fitted style that doesn’t gap when buttoned up.
- Sport a v-neck, not a crewneck. A crewneck cardigan can have a very severe vibe, a v-neck makes a chic statement, that’s slightly more casual in tone.
- Pick a cropped length. If you’re interested in tucking your cardigan, a cropped length is ideal, for less bulk at your midsection. A cropped length also works well with high waisted trousers and jeans.
To mix up your style, without spending money, try sporting your cardigans as a shirt, all buttoned up.
